About the Journal

Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies is an international peer-reviewed journal published by Bahtera Al Fikr Press, part of Institut Bahtera Studi Islam. The journal provides an academic platform for original, critical, and future-oriented scholarship on Islamic knowledge traditions, ethics, religious authority, digital transformation, and Muslim societies.

The journal is dedicated to advancing Islamicate futures studies, understood as an interdisciplinary field that examines how Islamic intellectual traditions, Qur’anic and Hadith studies, Islamic ethics, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, Islamic law, education, governance, digital religion, sustainability, and Muslim social life respond to contemporary and emerging global challenges.

Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies welcomes original research articles, review articles, conceptual papers, comparative studies, systematic literature reviews, bibliometric studies, textual studies, and interdisciplinary analyses. The journal prioritizes manuscripts that demonstrate theoretical originality, methodological rigor, international relevance, ethical responsibility, and clear contribution to Islamic and Islamicate studies.

The journal covers, but is not limited to, the following areas: Islamicate futures studies; Islamic knowledge traditions; Islamic ethics; maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah; Qur’anic and Hadith studies; Islamic hermeneutics; digital Islam; artificial intelligence and religious authority; Muslim digital publics; Islamic education; Islamic social finance; governance; sustainability; environmental ethics; gender and family studies; Muslim minorities; migration; public policy; and social transformation in Muslim societies.

The journal seeks to move beyond purely descriptive, devotional, apologetic, or local studies by encouraging articles that engage critically with international scholarship and offer conceptual, empirical, methodological, or theoretical contributions. Local case studies are welcome when they provide broader analytical relevance for global debates on Islam, ethics, knowledge, governance, technology, and Muslim public life.

All manuscripts submitted to the journal undergo an initial editorial screening and a double-blind peer review process. The journal is committed to publication ethics, academic integrity, originality, transparency, and responsible scholarly communication.

Islamicate Futures: Knowledge, Ethics, and Muslim Societies is published twice a year, in January and August. All published articles are made freely available through an open access policy under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing users to read, download, distribute, and reuse the work with proper attribution to the original author(s) and source.
